Holiday Heating: Tips & Reminders

Picture this: The holidays are right around the corner, and you’re finishing all the home improvement projects you can before your relatives and guests arrive. The roof, windows and siding have all been replaced, and the last thing on your list is improving your heating. If you want your family and guests to be comfortable while in your home, you need to make certain that a nice warm room awaits them after a night of holiday festivities. if you need help ensuring your indoor air quality is top-notch, Thomas J. Fannon & Sons is here to share some important information!

Clear the ventilation system. Clean out your intake vents, as they’re essential for good ventilation throughout your home. Trash like paper, ribbons, cloth, cardboard and other wide, flat objects can disrupt the intake process and cause all adjacent rooms to become extremely cold, making it hard to sleep properly. This also poses a health risk involving temperature, especially to infants.

Replace HVAC filters. Replacing your heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) filters is key! Your heating unit and air conditioner can’t perform to their utmost if the filters are old and clogged. Not only that, but they can also pose health risks like allergies to the occupants of your home if they aren’t replaced regularly.

Store combustible objects properly. Highly flammable materials (like gift wrap and aromatic oils) should be stored properly, far away from areas that can induce spontaneous combustion. Make sure to label each one, and instruct your family not to use them or handle them without the proper supervision or instruction. As fuel oils are heavily used for indoor heating during the holidays, it’s also highly recommended that they be stored away from areas with combustible materials, as well as areas that people frequent. Smoking areas should also be designated, and a trash bin or ashtray with flame-retardant properties should be placed nearby.
