Is Your Air Conditioner Making Weird Noises?

Air conditioning systems are designed to cool homes and buildings with very little noise. So when loud or unfamiliar noises come from your cooling equipment, take notice. Ignoring these sounds can turn minor problems into poor indoor air quality and some major expenses.

Here are common sounds air conditioners could make and what they mean.

  • Banging: A loud repetitive banging sound is a sign that there is a loose or broken part inside the equipment. It could be a connecting rod, crankshaft or piston pin. Or perhaps the blower is out of balance. In severe cases, banging noises indicate the need for a compressor replacement.
  • Clicking: Clicking noises are normal and expected during the startup and shutdown of the air conditioning system, but constant clicking means something is wrong. It could be a bent fan blade, failing thermostat, or faulty control. Your system has a lot of electrical components, so make sure to have these noises inspected by an air conditioner tech to avoid extensive damage.
  • Rattling: A rattling noise could mean that your cooling equipment is about to fail. Some of its parts might be loose, or leaves and other debris might have clogged your system. At times it is the electrical contractor that makes the chattering sound, which could damage other parts of the equipment if not attended to right away.
  • Squealing: Noises such as squeaks or squeals are often due to outdoor fan motors and indoor blower motors going bad, and they are transmitted through the ductwork. For some units, a minor squealing sound is normal during startup. However, if it is something you have not encountered throughout your system’s use, it is better to have it checked by a professional.
