How to Tell if You Need to Replace Your Water Heater

Keeping your water heater in good condition through routine maintenance can considerably improve your bathroom experience. After all, there’s nothing more annoying than being jolted awake by a cold shower in the morning. In addition, constant wear and tear will take a toll on your water heater’s heating capacity.

How can you tell if it’s time to replace your water heater?

The Average Lifespan of a Standard Water Heater

If your water heater is nearing the end of its lifespan, you might want to start looking for a replacement. A hot water tank will generally last anywhere from eight to 12 years, provided it’s of high quality and is maintained properly. A tankless water heater, on the other hand, can last long as 20 years if it receives routine maintenance. In general, contractors recommend scheduling a maintenance check for your water heater at least once a year and replacing it once it’s passed the 10-year mark.

Why Tankless Water Heaters Last Longer

Tankless water heaters only heat water when you need it, reducing the risk of corrosion. Normally, the anode rod in the tank attracts the minerals in hard water, which can create rust that eats away at the tank’s lining. Over time, however, the anode rod becomes worn out, leaving the inside of the tank—particularly its bottom portion—vulnerable to corrosion.

Warning Signs That a Replacement May Be Needed

  • Diminishing heating capacity -Those with traditional water heaters in their homes should make sure to first check its fuel oil if the water isn’t up  as it should. The water heater may simply be running low on fuel.
  • Discolored water – If rust-colored water is coming out of your faucet, turn on the cold water first. If the water’s clear, your water heater might be to blame for discolored water.
  • Odd noises – Keep an ear out for creaking, banging or clunking noises.
  • Leaks – Rust eating away at the inside of a water heater tank may eventually cause leaks.

Of course, the only way to tell for sure if you need a water heater replacement is to consult an experienced professional.
