Why Your Furnace Keeps Blowing Its Fuse

It’s a good idea to hire a professional to perform regular maintenance on your furnace and water heater, particularly before the start of winter every year. Just because your equipment is functioning properly now doesn’t necessarily mean major issues won’t present themselves when temperatures are at their lowest.

Not only is a broken furnace a threat to your comfort during the coldest months of the year, but also to your health and the protection of your home when freezing temperatures threaten.

Spending money on maintenance is one way to reduce the expenses of HVAC repairs or premature equipment replacement and prevent serious problems such as your furnace blowing its fuse.

There are several possible reasons that a furnace or a heat pump may keep blowing its fuse:

Debris and dust. Without proper, regular maintenance, it’s possible for your furnace to collect a lot of dirt. The air filter will get inundated with grime, which can then transfer to the blower motor. This is dangerous for your furnace because the motor can overheat and burn out. The high limit will then fail, as it will be coated with debris and sticky soot. This is why you need professionals to regularly clean and inspect your furnace for potential problems.

Loose wires. Your furnace has a system of wires. Due to the furnace’s constant vibrations, wires can loosen over time and cause a short. This can lead to a blown fuse or another electrical issue. It’s not a good idea to check this on your own, as it could be dangerous if you’re not sure about what you’re doing because you’re dealing with a complex piece of equipment. Instead, call a professional to fix your furnace.

Faulty or worn parts. A blown fuse can be caused by other parts of your furnace wearing out or failing. The valves, blower motor, transformer and starting capacitor are worth checking if your furnace stops working. Again, it’s advisable to call a professional to do this job.
